Los Angeles permits: which department you actually deal with
There is no single “Los Angeles” permit counter. If your home is inside the City of Los Angeles, your project runs through the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS). But dozens of independent cities inside LA County — Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Pasadena, Burbank, and Glendale among them — each run their own building department, submittal system, and timeline.
Homes in unincorporated LA County — areas that are not inside any city — are permitted through LA County Public Works, Building and Safety instead of a city hall. Hillside lots, designated fire-hazard zones, and coastal areas can add review steps on top of the standard permit. We confirm exactly which jurisdiction your address falls under before design starts, so the timeline reflects reality.

Which building department will handle my permit?
It depends on your address. Homes inside the City of Los Angeles go through LADBS. Independent cities like Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Pasadena, Burbank, and Glendale run their own departments. Unincorporated LA County areas are handled by LA County Public Works. We identify the right one before design begins.
How is pricing handled?
After the design is set, we provide one fixed price covering the agreed scope — not a moving estimate. Your final number depends on the size and complexity of the project and the finishes you choose.
